“…Except for being produced by single BiOCl and Bi 2 O 3 solid, h + and e – can also be produced in the BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction. It has been reported before that in the preparation of photocatalysts under different synthetic conditions, different particle sizes, pore structures, and microstructures can be obtained, which will affect the optical band gap energies ( E g ) of the prepared photocatalysts. Simultaneously, the relative position of the conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB), which is closely related to the value of E g , determines the properties of the synthetic heterojunction through affecting the flow path of e – and h + . For instance, for the BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 material prepared from Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O in KCl solution, h + and e – were produced in Bi 2 O 3 and BiOCl under UV irradiation, respectively .…”

“…However, the reported BiOX materials only contained one or two halogen elements have been prepared by precipitation methods at room temperature, but the crystallisation duration is relatively longer, such as 4 h or 12 h [18, 19]. Additionally, BiOXs (X = Cl, Br and I) particle with three halogen elements was prepared by a facile solvothermal route, the visible light catalytic properties of which are better than that of BiOX (X = Cl, Br or I) obtained under the same preparation conditions in our group [26]. According to the above theories and experiments, BiOXs with three halogen elements prepared by precipitation methods (P‐BiOXs, X = Cl, Br and I) at room temperature for a short reaction time should exhibit more excellent photocatalytic efficiency.…”

“…This is due largely to the fact bismuth oxyhalide compounds such as BiOI (E g = 1.7 eV) possess narrow bandgaps compared to TiO 2 (E g = 3.2 eV) [12] and therefore can function under lower-energy irradiation including visible light [12,70]. Numerous other groups have also shown BiOX catalysts present high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation [71][72][73][74]. This is a tremendous advantage of using BiOX catalysts since water can be treated in outdoor facilities vs. storing it in tanks or channels at a wastewater treatment facility with continuously running UV lights.…”
