Hierarchical Porous Carbon Derived from Peanut Hull for Polysulfide Confinement in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract: The main issues of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, including the insulating properties of electrode materials and the dissolution of lithium polysulfides into electrolytes, hinder their further development. Encapsulating S with a conductive agent is considered as an effective way to address these issues. The electrical conductivity of the electrode is substantially improved by the addition of a conductive agent. Furthermore, the polysulfide dissolution is also effectively suppressed by the physical/chemical c… Show more

“…Li's group designed a low-cost and readily scalable synthesis strategy to produce HPC. [123] The HPC/S cathode delivered a high capacity of 1002 mAh g −1 S at the specific current of 0.5 A g −1 , and then, after 100 cycles, it delivered a capacity of 601 mAh g −1 S at the same current density.…”

“…The physical activation method is performed by inert‐atmosphere calcination, followed by high‐temperature (600–1200°C) activation with the introduction of suitable gasifying agents (CO 2 , 135,152–157 NH 3 , 158,159 Cl 2 , 160–163 and steam 164 ). In contrast, chemical activation includes mixing of carbonaceous materials and activating agents (e.g., KOH, 29,84,165–199 NaOH, 200 K 2 CO 3 , 201,202 H 3 PO 4 , 203–205 etc. ), followed by calcination at a lower temperature (400–900°C).…”

“…With the help of physical or chemical adsorption, sulfur is fixed on the surface of the host matrix to improve the electrode conductivity and inhibit the shuttle effect. In recent years, carbon materials, metal compounds, and conductive polymer materials have been widely used and achieved many valuable milestones.…”
