Hierarchical structures of ZnO spherical particles synthesized solvothermally

Abstract: We review the solvothermal synthesis, using a mixture of ethylene glycol (EG) and water as the solvent, of zinc oxide (ZnO) particles having spherical and flower-like shapes and hierarchical nanostructures. The preparation conditions of the ZnO particles and the microscopic characterization of the morphology are summarized. We found the following three effects of the ratio of EG to water on the formation of hierarchical structures: (i) EG restricts the growth of ZnO microcrystals, (ii) EG promotes the self-ass… Show more

“…The particle size did not so much depend on the preparation conditions and was comparable to the previous results prepared in 87.5 vol %-EG solvents at 95°C. 5) Newly precipitated powders were porous, and the surface of the aged powders was covered with plate-like patches. Induction periods before precipitation of spherical particles were about 6 and 3 h at 95 and 120°C, respectively.…”

“…One of the methods to synthesize ZnO hierarchical structures is the ethylene glycol (EG)-assisted solvothermal process using mixtures of water and EG as solvents. 5) Because EG has affinity for water, the conditions of hydrothermal processes can be optimized by adjusting the mixing ratio of EG and water. Round shaped ZnO particles such as spheres, doughnuts and flowers have been synthesized.…”

“…However, only a small part mentioned the synthesis of hierarchical ZnO materials in photocatalytic application [4,[8][9][10]. In addition, especially in the photocatalytic application of ZnO, most of the previous reviews are limited to low dimension (0D, 1D and 2D) ZnO nanostructures, where reviews about hierarchical ZnO nanostructures are still insufficient.…”
