High ankle injury rate in adolescent basketball: A 3‐year prospective follow‐up study

Abstract: This prospective study investigated the incidence and pattern of acute time-loss injuries in young female and male basketball players. Eight basketball teams (n=201; mean age 14.85±1.5) participated in the follow-up study (2011-2014). The coaches recorded player participation in practices and games on a team diary. A study physician contacted the teams once a week to check new injuries and interviewed the injured players. In total, 158 injuries occurred. The overall rate of injury (per 1000 hours) was 2.64 (95… Show more

“…Participation in team sports has become increasingly popular among young people around the world. Fast‐paced pivoting and jumping sports, such as basketball and floorball, have a high incidence of lower extremity (LE) injuries, ankle and knee ligament injuries in particular . Increased risk of recurrence, functional deficits, and osteoarthritis as well as prolonged absence from sport participation are devastating outcomes of these injuries .…”

“…In Finland, about 144 000 adolescents play floorball and 35 000 adolescents play basketball as a leisure activity (Finnish National Exercise Survey 2009-2010, www.olympiakomitea.fi). The number of licensed players in Finland is currently about 57 400 in floorball (Finnish Floorball Federation, www.salibandy.net) and 16 800 in basketball [42]. Team sports are characterized by high speed, rapid stops, turns and jumping [11,42,43], which result in high loads especially on the lower extremities.…”

“…Despite the differences in exposure data collection, these findings are consistent with those of previous studies 3) 5) 8) . Because of the high recurrence rate of ankle ligament sprain 9) , prevention strategies are greatly important. Prophylactic taping, ankle braces, and proprioceptive training…”
