High cycle fatigue simulation: A new stepwise load-advancing strategy

Abstract: Abstract.A stepwise load-advancing strategy for cyclic loading will be presented in this paper that yields convergence in reasonable computational time for highly nonlinear behaviour occurring past the S-N curve. The algorithm is also effective when dealing with combinations of cyclical loads. The strategy is coupled to a continuum damage model for mechanical fatigue analysis. A brief overview of the constitutive model is also presented although it is not the main focus of this work. The capabilities of the pr… Show more

“…Nowadays numerical simulation is a useful and powerful tool to analyse and predict physical processes such as industrial forming processes (Ryzhakov et al, 2016), structural analysis (Barbu et al, 2015;Chacón et al, 2016), electromagnetic interference (Otin, 2013), fluid dynamics (Bussetta et al, 2014;Colomés et al, 2016), etc. Using numerical models, it is possible to minimize and in some cases avoid experimental studies, and it is also possible to understand complex phenomena for which direct observation and measuring is difficult or impossible (Jeong et al, 2017;Mimouni et al, 2016).…”

“…The chosen approach in the present work is a strength reduction model at constituent constitutive level based on the formulation adopted for metals under cyclic loading condition [20] [21]. The stresses and strains of the composite constituents are calculated using a modified serial/parallel mixing theory (SP RoM) [22], which allows different constitutive behaviour for each of the composite components and can accurately model delamination effects, which are expected to be a consequence of fatigue damage.…”

“…The constitutive formulation described in Section 2 is coupled with a stepwise load-advancing strategy described in Oller et al [24] and Barbu et al [21] that consists of two different phases. The first one is defined by load-advance being conducted by small time increments, with the consequent load variation following a cyclic path.…”
