High dielectric and actuated properties of silicone dielectric elastomers filled with magnesium‐doped calcium copper titanate particles

Abstract: In this paper, magnesium-doped calcium copper titanate (M-CCTO) submicron particles, which had high dielectric constant by a broadband dielectric analyzer, were successfully designed and prepared by the coprecipitation method. Then, the silicone elastomer filled with M-CCTO particles had high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and actuated strain which was greatly improved in low electric field. Compared with CCTO/commercial polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) composites, M-CCTO/PDMS composites with 2 wt% cont… Show more

“…The highest actuated strain of 6.2% was obtained by 10 phr BT-KH570/BIIR at 37.5 kV mm À1 , which is about 2 times higher than that of pure BIIR. 24,37 According to the Maxwell equation, 38,39 in order to obtain a superior actuated strain, the electromechanical sensitivity (b), which is the ratio of dielectric constant to elastic modulus, is regarded as a signicant value. When 10 phr ller was added into the BIIR matrix, the electromechanical sensitivity (b) was the largest of the series, thus leading to the composites exhibiting the largest actuated strain.…”

“…Large and complex actuations as a result of electro‐mechanical transducing of DEs are key factors in many engineering applications, such as, in soft robotics, sensors, energy harvesters, and artificial muscles 6,7,8,9,10 . At present, acrylic polymers, such as, VHB and silicone polymers are most commonly used DEs due to their favorable behavior under the application of an electric field 11,12 . A significant research efforts have been directed in recent years to characterize mechanical, electrical, and electro‐mechanical properties of commercially available elastomers as well as customized new polymers and polymer composites as DEs 13,14,15 .…”

“…[99] On the other hand, electrostrictive phenomena can transform mechanical energy into electrical energy to design small generators. [166] The high dielectric elastomer generator has the advantages of light weight, low cost and small size. [167] For the simplest parallel plate capacitors, the electric energy after charging can be expressed in equation (5).…”
