High-efficiency aerial display using a liquid crystal polarization grating, a retroreflector array, and a right-angle prism

Abstract: An aerial display scheme consisting of an orthogonal circular polarization grating (OCPG), a waveplate, a retroreflector array (RRA), and a right-angle prism (RAP) was developed. Because of the OCPG’s functionality, retroreflected light from the RRA is transmitted through the RAP boundary surface by avoiding the total reflection condition. The proposed system can potentially increase optical throughput to 100% by designing the boundary surface incidence angle to be Brewster’s angle. The scheme’s feasibility wa… Show more

“…In contrast to other mechanical deflection devices, a Liquid Crystal Polarization Grating (LCPG) is a device that introduces a continuous gradient tilt phase distribution based on the geometric phase to produce beam deflection [1,2]. It has the advantages of being tiny, light, and having low power consumption.…”

“…5 Since the aerial display can provide a floating image to the viewer based on the simple structure, various approaches for the develpment have been proposed. [6][7][8] However, a critical problem of the aerial display is that the volume is huge because the angle of the half mirror is at 45 degrees.…”
