High-Efficient Liquid Exfoliation of Boron Nitride Nanosheets Using Aqueous Solution of Alkanolamine

Abstract: As one of the simple and efficient routes to access two-dimensional materials, liquid exfoliation has received considerable interest in recent years. Here, we reported on high-efficient liquid exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) using monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution. The resulting BNNSs were evaluated in terms of the yield and structure characterizations. The results show that the MEA solution can exfoliate BNNSs more efficiently than the currently known solvents and a high yield … Show more

“…In contrast, these peaks show reduced intensity for exfoliated h‐BNNSs. Moreover, the intensity of the major peak (002) of exfoliated h‐BN decreases due to density change in the exfoliation process [12,13] . Furthermore, the major peak is also slightly shifted to the lower angle (2θ value changes from 26.71° (bulk h‐BN) to 26.68° (exfoliated h‐BNNSs)) which signifies that the interlayer spacing increases after exfoliation and polar solvent molecules are easily entered into the specified interlayer structure.…”

“…All layers of h‐BN are associated due to weak Vander Waals forces [10] . Many similarities are also found in the mechanical and thermal properties of graphite and h‐BN [11,12] . An inequality between h‐BN and graphite is found to be that h‐BN is a wide bandgap (∼5–6 eV) semiconductor, whereas graphite is an amazing conductor [13–15] .…”

“…Liquid phase exfoliation is a versatile nanosheet production method which exfoliates layered crystals down to few-layered nanosheets in appropriate stabilizing liquids. [23][24] It has been applied to a range of layered crystals including graphite, h-BN [5][6][25][26][27][28][29] and MoS 2 and tends to yield polydisperse samples of nanosheets with broad lateral size (~100-1000 nm) and thickness (~1-20 layers) distributions. 23,[30][31] As a result, centrifugation-based size selection is required to enable any study where well-defined sizes are required.…”

“…However, for co-solvents with easily tuneable surface tension (by varying the components ratio), it is found out that the optimal surface tension value is variable, dependent on the type of selected co-solvents. For example, the optimal surface tensions of co-solvents of water with tert-butanol, isopropanol, 1-propyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol, and monoethanolamine are 21.3, 24.5, 25.3, 28, 32.9, and 55 mJ•m −2 respectively [29,32]. In this case, surface tension is not the sole factor that influences the effectiveness of co-solvent exfoliation.…”
