High-energy chemistry of formamide: A unified mechanism of nucleobase formation

Abstract: The coincidence of the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB) period and the emergence of terrestrial life about 4 billion years ago suggest that extraterrestrial impacts could contribute to the synthesis of the building blocks of the first life-giving molecules. We simulated the high-energy synthesis of nucleobases from formamide during the impact of an extraterrestrial body. A high-power laser has been used to induce the dielectric breakdown of the plasma produced by the impact. The results demonstrate that the initia… Show more

“…The formation of acids 29-32 may be explained by the in situ generation of HCN followed by oligomerization to DAMN (actually detected in the reaction mixture), hydrolysis, and successive redox processes (112). Moreover, carboxylic acids have been also produced in low amount during UV photoprocessing of interstellar ice analogs (113), i.e., by slow deposition of simple mixtures of CO, NH 3 , and H 2 O, with formation, among others, of 30 and 32 (114). In this latter case, radical mechanisms involving nitrogen and carbon-centered species have been hypothesized (115).…”

“…On the early earth, the estimated formamide concentrations were fairly low of the order of 10 −7 -10 −3 wt % [3][4][5][6][7][8]33]. The highest concentrations were probably reached in lakes with depths of up to 10 m. In these regions, the formamide concentration increased because of preferential vaporization of water, with a roughly two times lower boiling point compared to formamide [4].…”
