We develop a formalism for particle production in a field theory coupled to a strong time-dependent external source. An example of such a theory is the Color Glass Condensate. We derive a formula, in terms of cut vacuum-vacuum Feynman graphs, for the probability of producing a given number of particles. This formula is valid to all orders in the coupling constant. The distribution of multiplicities is non-Poissonian, even in the classical approximation. We investigate an alternative method of calculating the mean multiplicity. At leading order, the average multiplicity can be expressed in terms of retarded solutions of classical equations of motion. We demonstrate that the average multiplicity at next-to-leading order can be formulated as an initial value problem by solving equations of motion for small fluctuation fields with retarded boundary conditions. The variance of the distribution can be calculated in a similar fashion. Our formalism therefore provides a framework to compute from first principles particle production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions beyond leading order in the coupling constant and to all orders in the source density. We also provide a transparent interpretation (in conventional field theory language) of the well known Abramovsky-Gribov-Kancheli (AGK) cancellations. Explicit connections are made between the framework for multi-particle production developed here and the framework of Reggeon field theory.

A consistent treatment of both multiple scattering and small x quantum evolution effects on pair production in high energy pA collisions is feasible in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) [1]. We first discuss the properties of quark pair production in the classical effective theory where only multiple scattering effects are included. Explicit results are given for pair production as a function of the invariant mass of pairs, the pair momenta, the atomic mass number A and the quark mass. We relate the logarithms that appear in our formulation of pair production to logarithms that appear in the limit of collinear factorization in QCD. Violations of k ⊥ factorization and medium modifications, as represented by the Cronin effect, are also investigated. We next consider how small x quantum evolution (shadowing) effects modify the results for pair production. In particular, we provide results for the rapidity distribution of pairs and the dependence of the Cronin effect on rapidity. We discuss the dependence of our results on the initial conditions for small x evolution and comment on its implications for pair production at RHIC and the LHC.1 URA 2306 du CNRS.

We study single lepton production from semileptonic decays of heavy flavor hadrons (D, B → l) in pp and pA collisions at RHIC and the LHC within the saturation/Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. Using the gluon distribution function obtained with the dipole amplitude, whose energy dependence is described by the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling effect, we compute the transverse-momentum (p ⊥ ) spectra of the lepton yields at mid and forward rapidities. We find that a large fraction of leptons at low p ⊥ stems from the saturation regime of the incoming gluons in the target, especially in pA collisions at the LHC. The resultant p ⊥ spectra is slightly harder than the data, but the nuclear modification factor seems consistent with the data within some uncertainty. We also update the nuclear modification factors for J/ψ and D meson at the LHC energy.
