Visualizing objects as they are perceived in the real world is often critical in our daily experiences. We previously focused on objects' surface glossiness visualized with a 3D display and found that a multi-view 3D display reproduces perceived glossiness more accurately than a 2D display. This improvement of glossiness reproduction can be explained by the fact that a glossy surface visualized by a multi-view 3D display appropriately provides luminance differences between the two eyes and luminance changes accompanying the viewer's lateral head motion. In the present study, to determine the requirements of a multi-view 3D display for the accurate reproduction of perceived glossiness, we developed a simulator of a multi-view 3D display to independently and simultaneously manipulate the viewpoint interval and the magnitude of the optical interview crosstalk. Using the simulator, we conducted a psychophysical experiment and found that glossiness reproduction is most accurate when the viewpoint interval is small and there is just a small (but not too small) amount of crosstalk. We proposed a simple yet perceptually valid model that quantitatively predicts the reproduction accuracy of perceived glossiness.

Although two-view 3-D displays requiring stereo glasses are on the market, the shape of objects they present is distorted when the observer's head moves. This problem can be solved by using a (passive) multi-view 3-D display because such a display can produce motion parallax. Another problem has to do with the surface quality of the presented object, but little is known about the fidelity of such displays as far as the surface quality goes. Previously, it was found that a two-view 3-D display has a problem in which glossiness deteriorates when the observer's head moves and that it can be alleviated by using a head tracker, whose data enables the display to produce correct motion parallax and luminance changes when the viewer's head moves. Here, it was determined whether this problem can be solved by using commercially available multi-view 3-D displays, whose finite number of viewpoints and certain amount of cross-talk, however, make luminance changes inexact and smaller than they should be. It was found that this display can solve the problem to a certain extent.

In acne treatment, it is important to accurately evaluate the severity of Acne. The acne should be classified into several skin lesions including comedo, reddish papule, pustule, and scar. However, in some cases, a visual detection from RGB image maybe difficult for the proper evaluation of acne skin lesions. This paper proposes an extraction method using the spectral information of the various type of acne skin lesions calculated from the multispectral images (MSI) of the lesions. In the experiment, we showed the possibility of classifying acne lesion types by applying a combination of several linear discriminant functions (LDF's).
