High-Frequency Operation of Series-Connected IGCTs for Resonant Converters

Abstract: Series connected IGCTs find application in hard-switched commercial power converters at the MW power levels. Expanding the application of these devices to medium voltage dc-dc resonant converters is of great interest due to the IGCT's low conduction losses. This requires a deeper understanding of the device's behaviour in series connection and under switching conditions different than those in hard switched converters. In particular, the voltage sharing between series connected IGCTs must be achieved with sign… Show more

“…The electrical MFT requirements are derived from the design specifications of the DCT and are outlined in Table 1 [25]. As can be seen, the operating frequency is set to 5 kHz, as a result of design optimization work that is not presented here.…”

“…As already mentioned, for the selected converter topology, the two characteristic winding inductances make the bigger part of the resonant tank. More importantly, the magnetizing inductance directly impacts the turn-off current of the semiconductor devices and consequently, the resulting switching losses [25]. Its value can be simply determined with the help of the following equation [27]:…”

“…In this paper FBs power stages are used to test the methods due to accessibility of LV equipment, sufficient to demonstrate the power reversal methods performances. However, presented algorithms are developed for MV prototype where IGCT NPC leg in combination with split capacitor bank [24], [27]. Results are not affected by the topology once the only aspect that matters are the square wave generation on the ac side, capacity to create three-level for the transient, and bidirectionally.…”
