High gene flow maintains wide-range species cohesion in a Neotropical epiphyte (Tillandsia aeranthos, Bromeliaceae)

Abstract: Studies of patterns of genetic diversity, genetic structure and ecological data across geographical ranges of species allow us to test hypotheses about the evolutionary responses of organisms to fluctuations in habitat connectivity and availability. Here we present a study aiming to assess genetic diversity, population structure and breeding system across the geographical distribution of a subtropical epiphyte, Tillandsia aeranthos (Bromeliaceae), endemic to the Plata River basin (Pampa biome). Seven nuclear m… Show more

“…Although these southern South American grasslands hold high levels of plant endemism and species richness (Andrade et al, 2018; Caetano et al, 2008; Overbeck et al, 2015; Silva‐Menezes et al, 2018), just a few studies contemplated the evolutionary history and genetic distribution of their plant species (e.g. Aoki‐Gonçalves et al, 2020; Fregonezi et al, 2013; Longo et al, 2014; Mäder et al, 2013; Moreno et al, 2018; Silva‐Arias et al, 2017; Turchetto et al, 2014), as well as animal species (e.g. Felappi et al, 2015; Kopuchian et al, 2020; Langone et al, 2016; Ojeda, 2010; Roratto et al, 2015; Werneck, 2011).…”
