Heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalizations in the United States, with >1 million admissions yearly and a 25% risk of readmissions within 1 month. In order to assist clinicians, we provide an update of the heart failure bibliography that was published in Pharmacotherapy in 2008, which followed the original bibliography published in 2004. A significant number of clinical trials and observational studies have been conducted since the early 1980s to guide management of heart failure patients. Major advances have occurred in the past 10 years, and our understanding of the diagnosis, prevention, and management of heart failure has evolved substantially during this time period. Specific areas of this review include heart failure risk factors, management of comorbid conditions, acute heart failure management, chronic heart failure management, advanced heart failure, device therapy, lifestyle modification, and medication and therapy management, including medication adherence. Key consensus guidelines and statements are also included. This bibliography of key heart failure papers aims to provide clinicians and their trainees with a valuable clinical reference resource and teaching tool that may be used to optimize the care of patients with heart failure.

More than 1 million people in the United States experience an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) every year, and almost 600,000 undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for treatment of cardiovascular disease. There is a large amount of evidence-based literature to guide appropriate management of these patients. There have been a number of advances in the treatment of these patients over the last several years. Due to the large amount of rapidly available literature concerning the care of patients with ACS or undergoing PCI, clinicians can often find it difficult to keep up with the information needed for optimizing care of these patients. Therefore, we provide the second update to the first compiled bibliography of key articles and guidelines relative to patients with ACS published in Pharmacotherapy in 2004. The initial update was published in Pharmacotherapy in 2007 and also included bibliographies concerning management of patients undergoing PCI. A number of guidelines and practice-changing literature have been published since the update in 2007. Specific areas included in this review are updated summaries of clinical practice guidelines and clinical trials of anticoagulants, antiplatelets, platelet aggregation testing, pharmacogenomics testing in patients taking clopidogrel, clopidogrel loading dose comparisons, clopidogrel and proton pump inhibitor drug interactions, the impact of bleeding in ACS, and statins. As with previous versions of this document, we hope that this compilation will serve as a resource for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, residents, and students responsible for the care of patients with coronary heart disease.

This compilation is part of a series of articles identifying important literature in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. This bibliography focuses on pharmacotherapeutic management of acute decompensated and chronic heart failure and provides an update of the heart failure bibliography published in Pharmacotherapy in 2004. Most of the cited works present the results of landmark clinical studies that have shaped the management of patients with heart failure. Limited primary literature is available for some topics, thus pertinent review articles are also listed. In addition, consensus documents formed by expert panels are reviewed. This compilation may serve as a teaching tool, reference resource, or update of the literature for pharmacy clinicians, physicians, and students.
