Electromembrane processes are well‐established techniques for the production of potable water from brackish water. During recent years, these processes have witnessed penetration into many areas such as energy production, food processing, personal care products, healthcare, production of high quality water, biomolecules separation, sensors, organic separation, industrial effluent treatment, etc. In this article, the principle of the electromembrane process is described along with its advantages and limitations for various applications. Recent developments in ion‐exchange membranes and their utilization in various areas are also described briefly.
