High Light Intensity Increases the CAM Expression in “MD-2” Micro-Propagated Pineapple Plants at the End of the Acclimatization Stage

Abstract: This work describes the evaluation of morpho-physiological and biochemical changes in "MD-2" micro-propagated pineapple plants (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) grown after 30 days under low light intensity (LL, greenhouse light conditions at 250 µmol•m −2 •s −1 ) or high light intensity (HL, field light conditions at 800 µmol•m −2 •s −1 ). Gas exchange, leaf pH, protein content and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) (EC 1.15.1.1) were measured every 3 h during one day. Chlorophylls content and succulence index (SI… Show more

“…The addition of sugar in the environment of cultivation showed a negative effect in the growing and photosynthesis in plants in vitro [22]. Besides the saccharose provoked the stimulations of the growth and the photosynthesis activity of tobacco plants in vitro [23] also in beet plants [24] and in potato plants [25]. These results indicate that the photosynthesis capacity depend mainly on the species and the environmental conditions and of cultivation that plants are submitted.…”

“…Furthermore, these studies do not describe the metabolic changes in cryo-derived plants during the transition from the in vitro to the ex vitro environment. It is known that pineapple plants undergo a shift from C3 to Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) when adapting to ex vitro conditions [29,30]. Therefore, this study investigates in detail, for the first time, the morpho-anatomical and physiological characteristics of cryo-derived pineapple plants during acclimatization.…”

“…Ethephon is basically stable under acidic conditions (pH <3.5) but decomposes to ethylene when the acidity is reduced (Silva & Caputo, 2012). The pH of pineapple leaves tissue could reach 6.5 (Prigge & Gurierrez-Soto, 2014;RodrÍguez-Escriba et al, 2015). Under such conditions, ethephon decomposes after penetration into the leaves.…”
