High-lying Rydberg states of barium in crossed fields

Abstract: We report recent experimental developments in the study of high-lying Rydberg states of atomic barium in crossed external electric and magnetic fields. By employing a new, high resolution, pulsed laser system in conjunction with the experimental geometry we have previously used, we have been able to extend our investigations closer to the semiclassical limit. We have compiled Stark maps which clearly indicate changes in dynamics that take place as the electric field strength is increased for a fixed magnetic f… Show more

“…Unfortunately, no experiments so far have been able to uncover clear evidence of the failing of one or other approach to the interpretation, the most complete test being probably the study of Rydberg atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields with full separation of circular polarisations, performed at Imperial College [14,15] and analysed at the Queens University, Belfast [16,17]. In short, issues relating to the field of 'Quantum Chaology' belong to the subject of 'Dynamics at the Nanoscale' (DYSON).…”

“…An experimental study of Rydberg states of H in strong perpendicular magnetic and electric fields was reported by Weibusch et al [28]. The effect of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields was also examined in Rydberg states of rubidium [29,30], sodium [31] and barium [32,33]. Rydberg atoms in strong perpendicular electric and magnetic fields are of interest because they exhibit a potential energy surface for the electron motion that has two minima [34,35].…”

“…In the present paper, we report a new set of calculations, which are based on similar principles, and we compare them both with earlier theoretical work and with the experimental data. We also note that recent experiments by Connerade and co-workers have led to new data on diamagnetic Stark spectra [9,10]. In absence of electric fields, however, the system possesses rotational symmetry.…”
