High maternal self-efficacy is associated with meeting Institute of Medicine gestational weight gain recommendations

Abstract: ObjectiveFetal exposure to an intrauterine environment affected by maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain increases the likelihood of infants born large for gestational age and childhood obesity. This study examined behavioural factors and lifestyle practices associated with women’s perceived attainability of meeting the 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) weight gain guidelines.MethodsCross-sectional data were collected from pregnant (n = 320) and postpartum (n = 1179) women who responded to the … Show more

“…In fact, no correction for multiple comparisons was performed in the multiple regression model. If this exploratory-rather than confirmatory-approach is extensively adopted in similar studies [117,119,120] to reduce the likelihood of Type II statistical errors as much as possible, this choice may have induced the increase in likelihood of Type I statistical errors. However, given these assumptions, the present data have to be considered as preliminary and should be replicated in further cohorts of patients.…”

“…possess high self-efficacy over GWG, which HCPs may help them recognize and acquire. 20 Furthermore, a psychological model known as the health belief model suggests that communication targeting self-efficacy, barriers, risks, and benefits is likely to result in more successful behavioral change. 21 In particular, during pregnancy women are motivated to make lifestyle changes for the health of their fetus; therefore, they may be more receptive to behavioral interventions.…”

“…Maternal risk factors can influence infant weight status. Prepregnancy overweight/obesity (BMI >25 kg/m 2 ), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and pregnancy weight gain >35 pounds expose the fetus to excessive intrauterine growth and can lead to rapid infant weight gain (Halili et al, 2019). Latina women who immigrate to the United States have a higher incidence of being overweight/obese than Non-Hispanic White women, and consequently their children face greater rates of obesity and diabetes (Commodore-Mensah et al, 2018;Hales et al, 2020).…”

Prepregnancy obesity and obesity during pregnancy have been linked to GDM and lowered breastfeeding rates in all childbearing women and are strong indicators of obesity in infants by 12 months (Halili et al, 2019).…”
