“…Arisawa et al [2] reported that HTLV-1-seropositivity was associated with increased mortality from all causes, excluding ATL (risk ratio [RR], 1.3; 95% CI, 1.0 -1.7), and that HTLV-1 infection was not associated with an increased risk of any cancer other than ATL, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and lung cancer but was associated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer (RR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.17-0.99). In addition, Asou et al [1] and Kozuru et al [8] reported that HTLV-1 infection was associated with an increased risk of various cancers.…”

“…ong-term infections with retroviruses such as HIV and human T cell leukemia virus-I are associated with an increased risk for Kaposi's sarcoma (1,2), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (3,4), anogenital cancers (5), and liver cancer (6). Although the depletion of HIV-infected CD4 ϩ T cells plays a major role in the immunosuppression associated with AIDS, it has also been shown that immunosuppression occurs before the onset of AIDS, and even before CD4 ϩ T cells become depleted (7).…”

“…HTLV‐I is also associated with various other diseases, such as HTLV‐I associated lymphoadenopathy (Ohshima et al , 1992), HTLV‐1 associated myelopathy and tropical spastic paralysis (HAM/TSP) (Yamano et al , 2002), HTLV‐I uveitis (Yamaguchi et al , 1994), HTLV‐I associated bronchopneumopathy (Kimura, 1992), and strongyloidiasis (Nakada et al , 1987). Previous studies have also indicated that the frequency of primary malignant neoplasms in ATLL patients infected with HTLV‐I (HTLV‐I carriers) is higher than in HTLV‐I seronegative non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases (Kozuru et al , 1996).…”
