High performance aligned short natural fibre – Epoxy composites

Abstract: Aligned short harakeke fibre (New Zealand flax) mats were produced using dynamic sheet forming, impregnated with epoxy resin, then pressed and cured on a compression moulder to manufacture composite materials. These composites were found to have significantly higher tensile properties than planar random oriented short fibre composites; the tensile strength (136 MPa) obtained for the composites is higher than any seen in the literature to date for short natural fibre composites. Fibre orientation was not affect… Show more

“…Natural fibers are not convenient as synthetic fibers to be arranged in parallel. Numerous studies have been conducted recently to maximize the orientation of fiber reinforcement intermediate products, which includes developing wrap spinning, automated fiber placement, dynamic sheet forming, and oriented flax tape [10][11][12][13]. Previous studies proved that newly developed highly aligned flax tape offer maximum mechanical properties compared to traditional textile-based natural fiber composites.…”

“…Since then, efforts had been undertaken by researchers to improve the ROM model’s prediction accuracy. Among them are Hirsch who merged ROM parallel and ROM series models 7 while Cox developed a shear lag model to calculate fibre length efficiency factor 11,12 and it was later incorporated into ROM parallel. 13,14 Sometime later Krenchel established Krenchel orientation efficiency factor to account for fibre orientation 15 which was incorporated into Cox ROM model 13,14 while Bowyer Bader improved ROM parallel by considering the subcritical and supercritical length fibres contribution to composites tensile properties.…”

“…It is relatively cost effective, biodegradable, and lightweight material [1416]. It has been proven by the previous data that composites based on natural fibers can offer comparable properties by supposing they are correctly designed [17,18]. Also, based on previous data, core structures made of natural fibers have been successfully fabricated [19].…”
