High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) profile of an insecticidal compound of Trochus radiatus and assessment of mucus-associated bacterial extracts

Abstract: The current study is based on the screening of novel insecticides from new sources that have not being exploited hitherto. The major objectives of this research work were to extract marine molluscs, Lambis lambis, Trochus radiatus and Chicoreus ramosus, from Tuticorin coastal waters using different solvents to test their insecticidal properties and partially purify the active components. The ethyl acetate extracts of L. lambis and T. radiatus showed 100% mortality of Sitophilus oryzae, at a concentration of 20… Show more

“…The study emphasizes that the fractionated leaf extracts of all seagrasses without exception presented better action than their analogous crude extracts could. The enhanced biological activity of the partially purified fractions against their respective crude extracts is described in earlier reports too (Gnanambal et al ., ; Solomon and Santhi, ; Asthana et al ., ).…”

“…Various investigations have proved that T. radiatus and Thais sp. contain a variety of bioactive compounds including a few toxins, which are known to possess potent haemolytic properties [30]. The purified extracts showed maximum haemolytic activity on human erythrocytes followed by poultry.…”

“…In order to screen novel insecticides from new sources, extracts of three marine molluscs, Lambis , Trochus radiatus and Chicoreus ramosus , were subjected to test their insecticidal properties. The ethyl acetate extracts of L. lambis and T. radiatus showed 100 % mortality of Sitophilus oryzae , at a concentration of 200 mg/ml [95] . Exposure under the methanol and aqueous extracts of marine sponge Iotrochota birotulata can lead the larval affectation to Spodoptera frugiperda , the antifeedant activity of extracts against larvae was also observed [96]…”
