High phosphorus concentrations in seed of wheat and annual medic are related to higher rates of dry matter production of seedlings and plants

Abstract: Seed of 2 cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and 1 burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) with increasing phosphorus (P) concentrations (wheat 1.4-3.7 g P/kg dry matter, medic 3.3-7.9 g P/kg dry matter) were collected from field experiments with variable levels of applied superphosphate (wheat 0- 577 kg P/ha, medic 0-364 kg P/ha) in south-western Australia. These seeds were used in further experiments to examine the effect of seed P concentration on the subsequent dry matter (DM) production of seedlings and plan… Show more

“…Under greenhouse conditions, wheat grown from seed of the same size but with increasing P concentrations (1.4 to 3.7 g P kg -1 ) produced higher dry matter yields up to 35 d after sowing (Bolland and Baker 1988). A similar effect occurred with medic (Medicago polymorpha), where the seed concentration ranged from 3.3 to 7.9 g P kg -1 .…”

“…A similar effect occurred with medic (Medicago polymorpha), where the seed concentration ranged from 3.3 to 7.9 g P kg -1 . In the field, the increases in wheat dry matter yield persisted until 67 d after sowing (Bolland and Baker 1988). In wheat, shoot dry mass for the first 3 wk of growth increased with increasing seed mass, P concentration and P content (Derrick and Ryan 1999).…”

“…Grain P is a valuable source of this nutrient for humans and animals. The additional benefit of high P contents in grain is a possibility of obtaining higher grain yields with better germination capability, which is particularly important in reproduction of sowing material (Bolland, and Baker 1988;Manske, et al 2001;De-Marco, 1990). A decrease of P contents results in reduction of grain anti-nutritional factors such as phytic acid Batten (1986).…”
