Abstract: high-pitch chest CT is a robust method to provide highest image quality making sedation or controlled ventilation for the examination of infants, small or uncooperative children unnecessary, whereas maintaining low radiation dose values.

“…High resolution computerised tomography (HRCT) scans produce excellent resolution with substantially lower radiation exposures and scanning times short enough to avoid general anaesthesia. 84 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can assess lung growth and development in utero , as well as extra utero without ionizing radiation. 85,86 Further development of both HRCT and MRI may allow pulmonary assessment early in life for birth cohort studies.…”

“…Effective dose (ED) was subsequently calculated by using a standard conversion factor of 0.0051 mSv mGy −1 cm −1 , and as the DLP values provided by the scanner system were based on a 32-cm body phantom, the values were then multiplied by a correction factor of 2.4 to correct for a 16 cm phantom as proposed by Lell et al [18], [19].…”

“…Lell et al 29 and Hardie et al 30 have reported that using the highpitch mode can significantly reduce the dosage in CT scans. However, another group 31 stated that using the high-pitch mode (1.6 # pitch # 3.2) for CT scans has only a minor impact on radiation dose.…”

“…However, a short acquisition time is doubtless a benefit of high-pitch scanning with a temporal resolution of 75 ms. One single scan phase can be performed in less than 1s (the average scanning time in our study was 0.46 s). This reduced scanning time renders sedation less important for infants, 29 and slight movements do not influence high-pitch CT image quality. One patient in the present study could not keep stationary during the CT scanning, but, by using the high-pitch mode, feeding arteries, draining veins and the extent of the lesion were clearly identified, and image quality was adequate for diagnosis and therapy planning ( Figure 1).…”
