The 'Light Detection and Ranging' technique, or Lidar, is a laser application to remote sensing. Lidar was in the laboratory stage in the 1960s and in less than 40 years it became a serious candidate for space applications at the turn of the 21st century. Over the years, the Lidar community made significant contributions to Lidar sciences and advancing the technique that makes Lidar an inevitable partner in geophysics and Earth observation. The French community, especially the Service d'Aéronomie and Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, have been involved since the beginning in the Lidar venture and made significant contribution.
