High-Precision Proton-Proton Bremsstrahlung Measurements below the Pion-Production Threshold

Abstract: An exclusive proton-proton bremsstrahlung measurement has been performed with polarized protons of 190 MeV. Absolute cross sections and analyzing powers have been measured with unprecedented accuracy in a large part of the phase space. The data are compared with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations including higher-order off-shell effects, like the D isobar and meson-exchange currents. Surprisingly, the calculations are unable to describe the data in detail.

“…For collisions with E cm ≈ 100 − 200 MeV these comparisons show that the SRA provides a good description of the data for ω << E cm , and for ω E cm underestimates the cross-sections by about a factor of about 2 [23][24][25]. Systematic comparisons have also find that the SRA provides as good a description of nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung data as do potential models with the model dependent 2-body currents [23]. For these reasons we propose that leading order SRA is well suited to calculate emission and scattering rates of LVB and are preferrable to models based on a one-pion exchange which include a subset of corrections arising from a sub-class diagrams in Fig.…”

“…The agreement between the theoretical predictions using the ROBE and the soft-photon TuTts amplitudes with both the highprecision Kernfysisch-Versneller-Institute (KVI) ppγ cross section data [32][33][34] and the TRIUMF ppγ cross section data [35] provides clear examples of the quantitative nature of the ROBE and soft-photon TuTts approaches to describing pp bremsstrahlung [7,8].…”

“…In particular, the elementary bremsstrahlung process for virtual and real photons has been studied in the pp system [13,14] and coherent bremsstrahlung in the a + p system [15]. To study the various medium effects the energy spectra and angular distributions of photons up to the kinematical limit were measured in reactions of 190 MeV protons with natural targets of C, Ni, Ag and Au.…”
