High-pressure behavior and tribological properties of wind turbine gear oil

Abstract: Different types of synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO) oils and a mineral oil are considered in this study. High-pressure viscosity test was done and pressure-viscosity coefficient was measured for all sample oils. Results showed the better performance of PAO oils than the mineral oil. Authors also tested some other tribological properties such as low-temperature behavior, bulk property, frictional coefficient, and wear behavior, which are important for wind turbine gear oil. Low-temperature behavior and frictiona… Show more

“…22 Here, the pressure–viscosity coefficient increases with the viscosity. 23 Thus, the shear strength of PIB-H is assumed to be higher than for PIB-M. In particular, the previous report suggests that PIB-M is the most suitable lubricant of the three kinds of PIBs for tightening bolted joints because PIB-M shows a more beneficial lubrication performance under the thin film lubrication regime than either PIB-L or PIB-H. 17 From the change ratio Δμ w in Figure 6(b), it can be seen that the friction coefficient μ w for VG46 decreases remarkably during the tightening process.…”

“…Gearbox Mia et al 57 determined the pressure-viscosity coefficient from high-pressure rheology for a mineral oil and different PAO wind turbine oil formulations. The values found are slightly lower than those calculated through Gold's equation.…”

“…11 There have also been other studies that report surface-adsorbed layers that are insensitive to pressure. 12 Therefore, the role of pressure and what determines a system's sensitivity to pressure are still not very well understood. In this paper, we present a systematic study on the role of pressure on three different systems that provide key insights into the role of pressure on adsorption.…”

“…There have also been other studies that report pressure dependence in a range of different systems including adsorption of insulin on chromatographic surfaces, enzymatic activity onto various surfaces, pressure reversal of anesthesia, and pressure-induced structural changes of surface-adsorbed polymer films , and proteins . There have also been other studies that report surface-adsorbed layers that are insensitive to pressure …”
