Hollow cathode discharge and micro-hollow cathode discharge have numerous applications in the fields of industry, medical treatment, environmental protection, and analytical chemistry. However, many of them lack the typical features of hollow cathode mode, especially the applications at atmospheric pressure. In order to investigate the underlying basic science of hollow cathode discharge, the hollow cathode discharge in argon was studied by experiments. The range for the operation of the hollow cathode mode in the argon-aluminum device was quantitatively determined to be from 0.8 to 4 Torr cm, no matter how small the cathode cavity is. The atmospheric pressure operation of the hollow cathode mode was realised with the aluminum cathode of a 50 μm cavity. The hollow cathode discharges were consistent with Townsend similarity law when the anode was very close to the cathode and the value of p•D was chosen at the lower limit of the range for hollow cathode mode. In contrast, if the anode was moved a little bit far from the cathode and the value of p D was significantly increased, the results followed Allis-White scaling law. The reason for the deviation of Allis-White scaling law from Townsend similarity law was given.

Recently, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) conversion into higher-value platform chemicals and synthetic fuels has drawn great attention as a result of global warming. Non-thermal plasma (NTP)-catalytic CO 2 conversion has emerged to significantly reduce the reaction temperature. However, this technology requires a paradigm shift in process design to enhance plasma-catalytic performance. CO 2 conversion using NTP and catalysts has great potential to increase reaction efficiencies due to the synergetic effects between the plasma and catalysts that can provide mutual improvement in their performances. It is crucial to present the recent progress in CO 2 conversion and utilization whilst specifying a research prospects framework and providing future research directions in both industries and laboratories.Herein, a review of encouraging research achievements in CO 2 conversion and utilization using NTP in recent years is provided. The topics reviewed in this work are recent progress in different NTP sources in relation to product selectivity, conversion, and energy efficiency; plasma-based CO 2 reactions and applications; CO 2 conversion integrated with CO 2 capture; and process development of NTP in terms of potential large-scale applications processes. The high market value of the possible products from the NTP process, including chemicals and fuels, make the commercialization of the process feasible. Developing a suitable catalyst with effective sensitivities and performance under intricate conditions can improve the selectivity of these carbon-based liquid chemicals. There is a need for more studies to be performed in this field.

Low insertion loss microplasma‐based limiter integrated into a microstrip bandpass filter

The use of microplasma discharges as power‐induced limiter elements in microstrip devices is proposed to protect receivers against high‐power microwave threats. A microstrip bandpass filter integrating such a microplasma‐based active microwave power limiter has been designed and measured. Power limitation is observed when the input power exceeds 19 dBm with a leakage power of 14 dBm. Due to the gaseous properties of the active medium, the proposed structure exhibits a very low additional insertion loss of 0.06 dB.
