High-pressure injection injuries of the hand

Abstract: In high-pressure injection injuries to the hand the most commonly injected materials are automotive grease, diesel oil, and paint. We treated twenty-six patients with high-pressure injection injuries of the hand and found that the injection of paint resulted in a poorer prognosis than did the injection of grease. Amputation is often necessary with paint injections into a digit, while injections into the palm have a somewhat better prognosis. The d~sability time of patients with paint-injection injuries appeare… Show more

“…The nature of the injected material is probably more important. It has been noted by many authors that injuries with paints have a worse outcome than those with oil or grease (8)(9)(10). The injected fluid spreads along the neurovascular bundles through places with the lowest resistance.…”

“…In an overview of injection injuries, Hogan and Ruland noted that there were 345 published cases of high-pressure injection injuries in the upper extremity [9]. Of these, 169 were caused by a paint-gun; paint was the injected material in 140 cases and paint thinner was injected in the remaining 29 [4,7,14,15,20,24,28,29,30,31,32]. Although paint-gun injuries have been reported, they are infrequent.…”

“…Kim et al non-dominant index finger. 1,3,6,7 Damage to the finger is more troublesome than to the palm of the hand because of the limited space available for expansion. 10 The injected materials, which would course volar to or enter inside the tendon sheath, would not actually penetrate the sheath which is more resistant than other soft-tissue planes (such as the neurovascular bundle).…”
