High prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria isolated from Municipal Solid Waste Dumpsite, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Abstract: Background The emergence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) among environmental microbes has been challenging global health. ABR can be transferred to human-associated bacteria aggravating the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Due to poor solid waste disposal practices, municipal solid waste dumpsite (MSWDS) can be a reservoir for antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, such as bacteria. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) bacteria at Bahir Dar city MSWDS. Methods Soil sample… Show more

“…According to the literature, dump sites represent an urban landscape with a distinct ecology and environmental conditions [39,40]. Dump site soils, for example, may form novel ecosystems with novel biodiversity composition, biogeochemistry, and ecological functions [41][42][43], which may be exploited for various biotechnological applications. However, the microbial and functional diversity of informal dumping sites is still poorly understood.…”

“…Numerous factors, including variations in the complexity of the disposed waste and physicochemical characteristics of the dump site, may be responsible for the difference in microorganisms found in this study and earlier studies. A diverse community of microorganisms may exist at the dumpsite due to the environment's variability [36].…”

“…Bacterial pathogens, mainly Gram-negative than Grampositive, are among the leading pathogenic microorganisms and have been posing serious public health problems globally by developing antibiotic resistance (ABR) [36], [43]. ABR was highly observed in bacteria Citrobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli isolated from dump site S3 with the antibiotics used while Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., and Staphylococcus aureus were found to be sensitive ( [44], [50].…”

“…Inappropriate antibiotic use is becoming highly prevalent in Ethiopia, and several studies have revealed the presence of many bacteria resistant to commonly used antibiotics [38][39][40]. Based on institutional studies, a high rate of ABR was also reported in Hawassa City [24,41,42].…”
