High prevalence of candiduria due to non‐albicans Candida species among diabetic patients: A matter of concern?

Abstract: The rate of candiduria was relatively high in type 2 diabetic patients and they were also suffering from a lack of proper blood glucose control. Although the frequency of non-albicans Candida species had not significantly higher than C. albicans, however, they obtained more from those with symptomatic candiduria.

“…Since the 1980s, there has been a marked increase in opportunistic fungal infections involving the urinary tract, of which C. albicans is the most commonly isolated species, but NCAC sp. is now the majority in many countries worldwide [275,276]. Candiduria (presence of Candida sp.…”

“…The study concluded that when considering the high incidence rate of candiduria in diabetic patients, the control of diabetes, predisposing factors, and causal relationships between diabetes and candiduria should be highlighted [277]. In a 2018 study, Esmailzadeh et al [276] evaluated candiduria among type 2 diabetic patients. Indeed, the results showed that the rate of candiduria was relatively high in type 2 diabetic patients and they were also suffering from a lack of proper blood glucose control.…”

“…The oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and other mucous membranes are the hosts of C. albicans, with other yeasts growing as the normal flora, leading to hematogenous seeding with yeast cells when the immune system is suppressed. According to epidemiological studies, non-albicans Candida species including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, and C. glabrata have repeatedly emerged as human pathogens (3,4).…”

“…Candida glabrata is an emerging human fungal pathogen, ranking as the second or third common cause of clinical forms of candidosis (1)(2)(3), highlighting bloodstream infections due to its unacceptable high mortality rate ranging from 58% to 61% (4). Furthermore, C. glabrata is a species complex comprised of C. glabrata sensu stricto, C. nivariensis, and C. bracarensis (5,6).…”
