High prevalence of Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) in foxes from western Austria

Abstract: Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) is a canine trichuroid nematode affecting the upper respiratory airways (i.e., nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses) of dogs, foxes, and wolves. In the past few years, reports in dogs and wild canids have increased from across Europe, but data on its occurrence and distribution in Austria is scanty. A total of 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the two westernmost provinces (Tyrol and Vorarlberg) of Austria were therefore examined for the presence of E. boehmi at necropsy.… Show more

“…Foxes are major reservoirs of Capillaria spp. affecting companion animals and prevalence is high in this wildlife from northern Italy and bordering countries [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 11 ]. As the dog was not subjected to routine copromicroscopic examinations nor did it received routine parasiticide treatments, this possibility cannot be ruled out, albeit no history of respiratory distress in the last few years was reported by the owners.…”

“…Infections by C. aerophila and C. boehmi are increasingly reported in dogs, especially in those areas where foxes are present [ 3 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 13 , 22 , 34 ]. In Italy, C. aerophila is enzootic in dogs and cats living in southern regions and, recently, also C. boehmi was identified for the first time in dogs from southern Italy, including the region where the dog lived [ 21 , 22 , 24 ].…”

“…Foxes are frequently infected by C. aerophila and C. boehmi in Europe, e.g. Serbia [ 8 , 41 ], Bosnia and Herzegovina [ 10 ], Austria [ 11 ], Switzerland [ 33 ] , Germany [ 42 ] and Italy [ 9 , 43 , 44 ]. Accordingly, hunting dogs and dogs with outdoor access living in peri-urban areas where foxes are present are under particular risk of infection with Capillaria spp.…”

“…Recently, E. boehmi has been receiving more attention and research has intensified. Prevalence in foxes ranges from 30.7 % in Italy (Veronesi et al, 2014) to 71 % in Denmark (Al-Sabi et al, 2013), and even 83 % in Austria (Hodžić et al, 2016b). On the other hand, data on jackals are far more lacking.…”
