High prevalence of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: does the imbalance between estradiol and progesterone play a role?

Abstract: This study demonstrated a higher prevalence of HT, elevated TSH, anti-TPO, and anti-Tg levels in PCOS patients. Increased estrogen and estrogen/progesterone ratio seem to be directly involved in high anti-TPO levels in PCOS patients.

“…Autoimmune thyroiditis is three times more common in patients with PCOS among women of reproductive age [16]. Statistically significant increases have been shown in TPOAb and TgAb positivity in PCOS cases [17][18][19]. In our study, TPOAb and TgAb levels were higher than in the control group.…”

“…The prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity has been found to be consistently increased in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that could lead to increase testosterone levels in women. It is suspected that PCOS and autoimmune thyroid disease may have a pathogenic link since they share similar factors, such as genetic susceptibility and sub inflammation/autoimmunity to the development of the disease [22]. In addition, we found higher levels of SHBG and low levels of progesterone in anti-TPO positive men, while reduced levels of parathyroid hormone and elevated levels of progesterone in women and men with anti-Tg positivity respectively.…”

“…Çalışmada en sık eşlik eden hastalık PCOS (n=5) idi. Son zamanlarda yapılan çalışmalarda PCOS'lu hastalarda HT sıklığının artmış olduğu gösterilmiştir (34,35). Polikistik over sendromlu hastaların HT açısından izlenmesi gerekmektedir.…”
