High Prevalence of Hookworm Species and Associated Factors among Soil‐Transmitted Helminth‐Infected Household Contacts in Burie Zuria District, Northwest Ethiopia: A Community‐Based Cross‐Sectional Study

Abstract: Background. Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are parasitic worms that are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions. In Ethiopia, one of the tropical countries, STH infections are high and cause a huge burden. Several STH species show a pattern of household clustering with regard to prevalence and intensity. However, there is a scarcity of data on the status of STH infection among family contacts of STH-infected individuals in Ethiopia in general and in the study area in particular. Objective… Show more

“…Despite control measures including mass drug administration, water, sanitation, and hygiene community based health education implemented in the country, the prevalence of hookworm among children remains high. The problem is severe in poor and rural communities [ 7 , 8 ]. Previous, reports in Ethiopia indicated that the prevalence of hookworm was high.…”

“…Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are a group of parasitic worms caused by intestinal nematodes, including Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenal (hookworms), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworms), and Trichuris trichiura (whipworms), that infect humans through contaminated soil with their eggs. (1) According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, Soil-transmitted helminths infections are among the most common infections worldwide with an estimated 1.5 billion infected people worldwide. (2) Since the early 1990s, the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar in the United Republic of Tanzania has been marked by a high prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths.…”
