“…We did assume, for example, that most MDR TB patients in Step 2 are subsequently misclassified and treated as either “new” or “retreatment” patients. However, due to limited data, we did not account for potential misdiagnosis with TB of patients who actually have other pulmonary processes, including non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection [90]. Due to poor adherence to the diagnostic algorithm, misdiagnosis with TB may especially be a problem for patients who have negative sputum smears [85].…”

“…Patients with high suspicion of tuberculosis who do not respond to conventional ATT are often presumptively diagnosed as MDR TB. Comprehensive data from Indian settings are lacking but the isolation rates ranges from 0.7 to 34% (11)(12)(13). In a study from 1998 to 2011, 29 patients were diagnosed with musculoskeletal NTM infection (4).…”

“…Since Ag85B protein is present in all mycobacteria including Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and environmental mycobacteria, I-PCR based on Ag85B detection may give false-positive results with other mycobacterial infections as the prevalence rate of environmental mycobacteria from India has been reported ranging from 0.5% to 8.6% (Jain et al, 2014). However, the presence of Ag85B in M. bovis BCG and environmental mycobacteria would unlikely impact the analysis of our results, as almost all the non-TB individuals (controls) included in the study were vaccinated with BCG and exposed to the same environment.…”
