High prevalence of osteoporosis in patients undergoing spine surgery in China

Abstract: Background With the increase in life expectancy, a large number of patients with osteoporosis (OP) are undergoing spine surgery, which may adversely affect the surgical success rate. The prevalence of OP varies in different regions, and no data are available that represent the prevalence of OP among Chinese patients over 50 years of age who are undergoing spine surgery. It was the first multicenter study to assess OP in these patients. Aiming to obtain comprehensive data, this study combined bo… Show more

“…In this study, women account for a much larger proportion in osteoporosis (83.05%) than the group of osteopenia (65.51%). This is consistent with the results of other studies that women are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, especially postmenopausal women [ 45 , 46 ]. This is because estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women leads to reduce bone mass by approximately 10%, and it can be as high as 20% in those 5–6 years around menopause [ 47 ].…”

“…Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP), which is caused by estrogen withdrawal, is the most frequent type of primary osteoporosis and threatens nearly half of middle-aged and elderly women worldwide [ 1 , 2 ]. Due to the lack of preliminary symptoms and typical features, delayed diagnosis is common in clinical practice, especially in surgical systems [ 3 ]. Fragility fracture is one of the most critical complications of PMOP, leading to high disability and mortality.…”

“…According to a recent multicenter study in China, the proportion of men and women aged > 50 years with osteoporosis was 6.46% and 29.13%, respectively, indicating that approximately 11 million men and 50 million women in China are affected [ [1]]. One study reported that, among 1,245 patients (men, n = 567; women, n = 678) undergoing spinal surgery, the respective osteoporosis incidence rates were 18.7% and 52.8% [ [2]]. Some studies have reported that screw loosening rates for internal xation range from 1-15% in non-osteoporotic populations, whereas the rate can be as high as 62.8% for patients with osteoporosis [3].…”
