Large-scale population movements can turn local diseases into widespread epidemics. Grasping the characteristic of the population flow in the context of the COVID-19 is of great significance for providing information to epidemiology and formulating scientific and reasonable prevention and control policies. Especially in the post-COVID-19 phase, it is essential to maintain the achievement of the fight against the epidemic. Previous research focuses on flight and railway passenger travel behavior and patterns, but China also has numerous suburban residents with a not-high economic level; investigating their travel behaviors is significant for national stability. However, estimating the impacts of the COVID-19 for suburban residents’ travel behaviors remains challenging because of lacking apposite data. Here we submit bus ticketing data including approximately 26,000,000 records from April 2020–August 2020 for 2705 stations. Our results indicate that Suburban residents in Chinese Southern regions are more likely to travel by bus, and travel frequency is higher. Associated with the economic level, we find that residents in the economically developed region more likely to travel or carry out various social activities. Considering from the perspective of the traveling crowd, we find that men and young people are easier to travel by bus; however, they are exactly the main workforce. The indication of our findings is that suburban residents’ travel behavior is affected profoundly by economy and consistent with the inherent behavior patterns before the COVID-19 outbreak. We use typical regions as verification and it is indeed the case.

Background China’s economy has been transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to high-quality development. The high-quality development of industry is the foundation of a sustainable and healthy growth of national economy, and is of great significance to improve people’s living standards, and to meet people’s needs for a better life. Methods We develop an evaluation index system of high-quality development of industry from the perspectives of industrial benefit, innovation ability, coordination ability, green ability, opening ability and sharing ability. Based on a panel data of 30 provinces in China during 1999–2018, we evaluate the level of high-quality development of industry using the entropy-weight method and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. Meanwhile we select six specific years and adopt the Natural Breaks method to classify the provinces according to their levels. At last, Moran’s I index is used to analyze the spatial correlation among the provinces. Results Opening ability and innovation ability are found to have greater impacts on industrial high-quality development than other indices, and their influence has been increasing in recent years. There are large spatial and temporal differences among different provinces. Municipalities and coastal provinces are found to be at constantly high levels. The levels in the central region dropped first and then increased, however it was the opposite in the western region. In the northeast region, the levels fluctuated greatly. Overall, the high-quality development of industry among China’s provinces shows positive spatial correlation. Most provinces in China are in High-High and Low-Low clustering States. The High-High clustering type is mainly distributed in the eastern region and the Low-Low clustering type is mainly distributed in the western and central regions. Conclusion (1) Innovation ability and open ability are the most important factors. (2) Green ability has not sufficiently contributed to China’s industrial development. (3) Regional and time evolution differences are significant. (4) There is a significant and stable spatial clustering effect in the high-quality development of industry among China’s provinces.

As China's economy shifts from a rapid development stage to a high-quality development stage, it is important to know how different FDI characteristics affect high-quality economic development. Furthermore, under the constraints of environmental regulations, will these impacts change? The dual-fixed spatial Durbin model and panel data of 30 provinces in inland China from 2005 to 2018 were used for analysis. This study finds that (1) under the constraints of environmental regulations, the scale of FDI, export orientation, and technology spillover capacity have a significant positive impact on China's high-quality economic development, but without the constraints of environmental regulations, only the technological spillover capability of FDI has such a significant positive impact. (2) FDI with strong technology spillover capabilities not only promotes local development but also plays a significant role in promoting high-quality economic development in surrounding areas through spillover effects. (3) Compared with secondary industry, tertiary industry plays a stronger role in promoting the high-quality development of China's economy. (4) The areas with high quality economic development are concentrated in the eastern coastal cities. The outdated economic and scientific research and technology in the central and western regions means that they lack the ability to learn advanced technologies from FDI.
