High Quality of Diabetes Care Based Upon Individualised Treatment Goals – A Cross Sectional Study in 4784 Patients in Germany

Abstract: In recent years new evidence is available regarding treatment targets. The reappraisal of a cross sectional study of a quality assurance programme of a German health insurance in a differentiated way demonstrates that more than 2/3 of the people with diabetes mellitus meet their specific goals. Only very few patients are at imminent risk due to bad glycaemic control and high blood pressure. Old patients may be at risk of overtreatment. Strategies aiming at adapting pharmacological interventions in older patien… Show more

“…What is more, depressive symptoms are significantly correlated to glycaemic control in patients taking 3 or more insulin injections per day, with no association among subjects who are taking fewer than 3 injections per day. In our study, there were no differences between the 2 groups regarding the type of diabetes treatment [33][34][35]. The strengths of our study include a considerable sample of T2DM from a Mediterranean area that includes rural and urban populations with racial homogeneity.…”

“…Besides these established clinical complications, there is emerging evidence that diabetes is linked to pulmonary fibrosis as well [8]. Current clinical management of diabetes focuses on blood glucose control [9], blood pressure control [10], lipid lowering [11], and lifestyle [12,13]. If glucose was the major factor for development of these complications, diabetes could potentially be healed and complications could be prevented by 100 % simply by normalizing blood glucose levels.…”

“…The exact pathogenesis of diabetic complications remains even nowadays unclear. Strategies aiming to treat diabetes and its complications focus on life style intervention, glucose lowering [1,2] blood pressure- [2] and lipid management [3]. Antidiabetic agents traditionally focused on treating hyperglycemia, but the absolute risk reduction of diabetic complications is between 1 and 5 % only, and remission of complications is not on the horizon.…”
