High Rates of Hidden HCV Infections among Hospitalized Patients Aged 55–85

Abstract: Background and Aims: The WHO has solicited all countries to eliminate HCV by 2030. The Italian government started routine screening for HCV infection in January 2021, initially targeting subjects born between 1969 and 1989. With the aim of achieving micro-elimination, we designed a hospital-wide project focusing on inpatients born from 1935 to 1985 and conducted it in our institution. Method: All inpatients aged 35 to 85, admitted from 10 February 2020 to 9 February 2021 for many different diseases and conditi… Show more

“…Based on the previously recommended HCV screening in Italy, the birth cohort 1948–1968 screening should be promptly guaranteed to achieve the HCV elimination goals. The results of this study indicate the opportunistic hospital screening in patients with various comorbidities as a feasible strategy to diagnose and subsequently easily link to care the infected patients [ 18 , 19 ]…”

“…Another study from China also revealed that male inpatients had a slightly higher anti-HCV antibody rate (0.91%) compared to female patients (0.85%) [13]. Further studies indicate a higher positive screening rate of over 3% in hospitalized patients aged over 55 years compared to non-hospitalized individuals [17,18]. A single-center study in an urban region of New Jersey found that residents aged 50-70 years yielded a higher positive screening rate of 6.3% [19].…”

“…Patients with an SVR accounted for 3%-87% of seropositive individuals in studies, including also individuals already cured with antivirals. [74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83] Overall, only 3 studies excluded individuals who already knew of their HCV status (i.e. anti-HCV positivity).…”

“…Interestingly, an active HCV infection was found in 7%–74% of anti‐HCV positive subjects with HCV‐RNA testing available. Patients with an SVR accounted for 3%–87% of seropositive individuals in studies, including also individuals already cured with antivirals 74–83 . Overall, only 3 studies excluded individuals who already knew of their HCV status (i.e.…”
