High-repetition-rate, quarter acoustic wave oscillation period pulse compression using transient stimulated Brillouin scattering

Abstract: In this work we demonstrate the compression of laser pulses at a high repetition rate, using transient stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Output pulses with pulse durations close to the quarter-acoustic wave oscillation period (τf) was obtained. We find that the primary factors which limit the compression of pulses under high repetition-rate, transient conditions are the inherently low gain in the transient regime, thermal accumulation within the SBS medium and optical breakdown. We show that short phonon … Show more

“…As a highly effective means of achieving a narrow laser linewidth output, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can generate laser pulses with a short-pulse duration and high beam quality. [15][16][17][18][19][20] In addition, this study demonstrates that the SBS has a controllable output linewidth. “…The medium in the cell is FC-770, which has a high capacity, and some of the parameters are listed in Table 1. Based on previous studies [ 17 , 18 ] , achieving both narrow pulse width and high reflectivity in SBS systems is challenging due to the trade-off between high gain and short phonon lifetime. Both factors play crucial roles in SBS performance.…”

“…With respect to the results that show pulse durations less than τ Q , Liu et al [ 17 ] obtained pulse outputs of average duration close to τ Q in the new liquid medium PF-5060, where the shortest pulse duration measured was 0.88τ Q , with an energy reflectivity of around 30%. In the same year, Cao et al [ 18 ] also obtained a pulse output with a duration of less than τ Q at a repetition frequency of 200 Hz and an energy efficiency of less than 40%. While the research on transient SBS pulse compression is developing rapidly, little is known about aspects such as the energy reflectivity of transient SBS, particularly with regard to spot profiles.
