High-resolution CT Findings in Patients With Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract: Our study suggests that radiologic extent of disease based on HRCT findings in patients with PTB correlated with the degree of smear positivity. Different HRCT findings such as nodule, cavitation, ground-glass opacity, consolidation, and bronchial lesion are significantly associated with smear-positive PTB. Particularly, nodules, cavities, and bronchial lesions might be predictors of smear positivity in patients with PTB. This study also suggests that the thickness of cavity wall and the distance of cavity fro… Show more

“…Previous studies have been carried out on the use of CT performance in differentiating peripheral lung cancer cavities and single pulmonary tuberculous thick-walled cavities. These earlier works focused primarily on whether the side wall of the cavity was lobulated, the inner wall had rugosity, the cavity wall was even or uneven or whether there were other features such as spiculate signs, processus spinosus, pleura indentation signs, calcification foci, satellite focus, bronchial dissemination focus and contrastenhanced CT characteristics, among others [9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…2016; 4(2):e35919. on chest CT increases with the number of AFB on the sputum smear in adult patients with active pulmonary TB (14,15). In our study, all patients had sputum smear positivity more than 2+ AFB.…”

“…The evidence of previous primary pulmonary TB was present in 3 patients (cases 2, 3 and 6) in this study. Multiple cavities suggest an underlying immune compromised condition or the possibility of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) (14,15). We found two patients with multiple cavities, one of them had MDR-TB who was afghan immigrant and the other one received pervious TB chemoprophylaxis.…”

“…The diagnosis of tuberculosis was established by a positive culture of gastric aspirates for M. tuberculosis or presence of more than two of the following three criteria: TST positivity; discovery of at least one family member with tuberculosis and finding that subsequent clinical or radiologic improvement from anti-TB treatment (9).…”

“…Authors mentioned that although a similar appearance can be seen in patients with atypical mycobacterial or bacterial bnonchopneumonia, these CT findings, if present, can be helpful in diagnosing tuberculosis in children (18). Centrilobular nodules of groundglass attenuation was reported among the CT findings with TB (9,19). Tuberculosis during early childhood, in particular, there is a continuum between tuberculosis infection and disease.…”
