High‐Resolution Water Vapor Maps Obtained by Merging Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar and GPS Measurements

Abstract: Water vapor is an important component of the Earth's atmosphere and is related to atmospheric energy transport, radiation balance, cloud formation, and precipitation (Trenberth et al., 2005). Precisely mapping (i.e., estimating) the spatial distribution of atmospheric water vapor with high resolution is important for understanding atmospheric dynamics (Emanuel et al., 1995). In the past two decades, spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques have shown great potential for mapping at… Show more

“…In addition to the Sentinel-1 data, time-series from more than 150 continuous GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) sites (Fig. 1), were used to estimate reference shifts between deformation rate maps from different tracks and to correct for possible orbital errors in the InSAR time-series analysis (Cao et al 2021b…”

“…As each SAR image is generated from three standard Sentinel‐1 image concatenated along‐track, the total number Sentinel‐1 data products we downloaded is over 3,000. “…Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been used to measure precipitable water vapor (PWV) maps with high spatial resolution (a few tens of meters) (e.g., [8][9][10][11][12]). When microwaves emitted from a satellite travel through the neutral atmosphere, the phase velocity of the microwave is changed, and the travel path is bended due to having a different refractive index to the vacuum.…”
