High Risk of Suicide in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia

Abstract: Background: Recent studies reported an increased risk of suicidality in behavioral variant Frontotemporal Dementia (bvFTD). Aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts in bvFTD patients, evaluating possible risk factors for suicidality. Methods: Risk of suicide was assessed using the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) in 35 bvFTD patients and 25 controls. Results: According to SSI, 40% of bvFTD patients had suicidal ideation in comparison to 8% of controls (p=.009). Four bv… Show more

“…In these two cases, possible AD diagnosis was attributed to both patients as their neuropsychiatric symptoms were well-correlated with progressive neurodegeneration in the brain. The presence of SB in these two cases was also consistent with the increased risk of suicidality in patients with AD [45][46][47][48][49]. However, unlike AD, in both cases the cognitive and psychiatric aggravation was rapid (within 2-3 years) and consistent with previously documented progression of these symptoms in CTE [50].…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the first US cohort study to compare suicide risk by dementia subtype. FTD has been associated with higher risk of non‐fatal suicidal acts, but samples were small and did not examine suicide deaths 31–33 . Data were scarce on suicide risk in DLB, which we found to have the second highest rate of suicide (32.57 per 100,000 person‐years).…”

“…Patients with bvFTD were found to have significantly higher functional and cognitive impairment levels and were more apathetic and impulsive. However, no differences in neuropsychological characteristics were identified when comparing patients with bvFTD at risk for suicide and patients with bvFTD with no suicide risk (29).…”
