High‐sensitivity GafChromic film dosimetry for 125I seed

Abstract: The dose response of high-sensitivity GafChromic film to photons from 125I seeds for doses up to 200 Gy was established. The optical densities were measured using two types of densitometers: (a) a Macbeth spot densitometer with broadband light spectrum, and (b) an LKB He-Ne laser scanning microdensitometer with red light of wavelength 632.8 nm. The net optical density was found to be a power function of dose with exponents of 0.858 and 0.997, for the Macbeth and LKB densitometers, respectively. Film sensitivit… Show more

“…The utility of the film derives from its tissue equivalence, capability for direct readout (no processing required), insensitivity to visible light, high spatial resolution, and independence of response to radiation energy or dose rate. 14,15 Each of the 9 stents tested was deployed with a separate angioplasty balloon and placed on top of a stack of 4 slices of Gafchromic film (see Figure 2). Doses were measured at distances of 0.125, 0.375, 0.625, and 0.875 mm from the surface of the balloon.…”

“…Traditionally, silver-halide radiographic films have been used. [1][2][3] More recently, radiochromic-film dosimeters, which have improved response to low-energy photons, [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] have been employed. The film response is quantified by high resolution measurement of the two-dimensional ͑2D͒ opticaldensity ͑OD͒ distribution contained in a film with high spatial resolution.…”

“…Advantages of EBT film compared to silver halide film include the following: relative energy insensitivity, insensitivity to visible light, selfdeveloping characteristics, greater tissue equivalency, and dose-rate independence. [20][21][22][23] Different investigators have noted up to 15% variation in the film response throughout a film that was exposed to a uniform dose of radiation. Sources for these uncertainties have been pointed out by Bouchard et al 24 Looking at two orthogonal directions, the film response is more uniform in one direction.…”
