High sensitivity simple structured displacement sensor using corrugated substrate‐integrated waveguide (CSIW)

Abstract: In this study, a corrugated substrate‐integrated waveguide (CSIW) is used to design a passive microwave displacement sensor. Hence, one of the electric walls of the proposed structure is formed by open‐circuited quarter guided wavelength stubs and the other walls are made by metal vias and moveable copper metal is placed on the stubs. By displacing the moveable metal layer along with the stubs, the length of the stubs is changed and therefore the resonant frequency is shifted. An analytical model that relates … Show more

“…Table 2 includes the comparison of the results of our work with the experimental results obtained in Xue 31 , Horestani 32 , Rezaee 33 , Soltan 34 and Wang 35 , where a VNA was used as a measuring instrument. When comparing the sensitivity it can be said that the sensitivity shown with the data obtained with the WSN is high since in three of the five papers presented a lower sensitivity is reported.…”

“…Moreover, the subwavelength-size characteristic of metamaterial elements is conducive to the integration and miniaturization of sensors. Owing to these advantages, metamaterials-based sensors have been developed rapidly, and their applications are becoming more and more diversified, including biological component sensor [ 1 ], gas concentration sensor [ 2 ], liquid content sensor [ 3 ], angular displacement sensor [ 4 , 5 , 6 ], displacement sensor [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], and permittivity sensor [ 16 ].…”

“…Displacement sensors are widely applied to bridge crack detection, liquid level detection, elevator position control system, automatic door control system, landslide detection, and other industrial automation fields. Considering its applications, many microwave sensors for measuring displacement have been proposed with regard to its advantages of the low cost of microwave devices, the easy measurement of the generated signals, the wide range of applications, and the compact structures [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Recently, displacement sensors based on the signals of resonant depth have been proposed, such as open-ended transmission lines loaded with split-ring resonators (SRRs) in [ 10 ] and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) consisting of periodic objects in [ 11 , 12 ].…”
