High-shore mussels, Mytilus californianus, have larger muscle fibers with lower aerobic capacities than low-shore conspecifics

In the ribbed mussel, Mytilus californianus, adductor muscle, CS activity was highest in low intertidal/higher O 2 environments compared with high intertidal/low O 2 environments (Dowd & Jimenez, 2019), similar to our findings here. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and CS have also been previously negatively correlated in white muscle of other pelagic freshwater teleost species, Paralabrax clathratu and Salmo gairdneri , consistent with their relationship reflecting choice of metabolic strategy.…”
