High-speed optical signal processing using semiconductor optical amplifiers

Abstract: The authors report on all-optical switching devices based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) in applications for optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission technology. The report includes a discussion on the basic properties of an SOA on the nonlinear processes of cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing in the SOA used for all-optical switching and on the application of the SOA as demultiplexer add-drop multiplexer clock recovery and wavelength converter. The devices considered here oper… Show more

“…It is important to note that their typical lengths are on the mm scale. Many efforts are devoted to the decrease of the operation period of these devices 24 . Re-amplification is even more crucial for other frequency domains, where the propagation distances are much shorter.…”

“…At symbol rates beyond 160 Gbaud, the optical gates are mostly fiber based using cross-phase modulation (XPM) or four-wave mixing (FWM) in fibers [4][5][6]. Another class of optical gates is based on XPM and FWM in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) [57]. “…Another class of optical gates is based on XPM and FWM in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) [57]. In general, the SOA-based optical gates operate well at symbol rates up to 160 Gbaud [57] although operation at symbol rates up to 320 Gbaud was also reported [58,59]. “…On-chip amplifiers are critical components for integrated photonic systems suffering from high coupling and propagation losses. This has motivated the development of several on-chip amplifiers [1] with high gain. However, most on-chip amplification also manifests in the generation of white noise through amplified spontaneous emission, which requires additional filtering.…”
