High‐speed railroads and economic geography: Evidence from Japan

Abstract: Our study shows that high‐speed railroads (HSR) can either polarize or diffuse economic geography based on the sector and distance between cities. Economic activities could agglomerate from distant to core areas, while disperse from core toward its periphery at the same time. Empirical evidence from the 1982 introduction of two major HSRs in Japan, which halved intercity transit time, support this. Noncore areas lost 3–6 percent population; service employment declined 7 percent, whereas manufacturing employmen… Show more

“…Since then, New Economic Geography (NEG) has developed rapidly (Brakman & Garretsen, 2009; Combes et al., 2008; Fujita & Krugman, 2004; Fujita et al., 1999). NEG shows that density, distance, and market segmentation are three characteristics of geographical changes in economic development, where distance is exogenous (Anderson, 2012; Li & Xu, 2018). NEG has been subject to criticism that mainly focuses on two aspects.…”

“…Olympic Games can cause further polarization between core and periphery (Krugman, 1991). The recent empirical literature on the effects of modern high-speed transportation infrastructure seems to support this hypothesis for countries such as China (Faber, 2014;Qin, 2017;Baum-Snow et al, 2018;Yu et al, 2019, among others), France (Charnoz et al, 2018) and Japan (Li and Xu, 2018).…”
