High Speed Telemetry Drill Pipe Network Optimizes Drilling Dynamics and Wellbore Placement

Abstract: This paper discusses the successes and lessons learned during the first deployment of a High Speed Telemetry Drill Pipe Network with a Rotary Closed Loop System (RCLS) and Triple Combo suite in North America. The paper details the operational experience while drilling a lateral well with an emphasis on drilling optimization and LWD processing; given the ability to receive real-time, memory quality, data via a telemetry drill pipe network. Recent advances in Logging While Drilling technologies… Show more

“…During the course of drilling these wells many wired pipe enabled applications and benefits were experienced. Some of these have been the subject of previous papers both from BP and other operators (Wolter et al, 2007;Olberg et al 2008, Ali et al, 2008Wolfe et al, 2009;Allen et al, 2009;Hatch et al, 2011;. Some of these benefits are quite obvious and were anticipated.…”

“…The introduction of wired-pipe technology (WPT) was first tested in 2003 and commercially launched in 2006 (Ali et al 2008;Reeves et al 2006), offered the wider real-time bandwidth (Manning et al 2007), allowing reliable, bi-directional data transmission at speeds up to 57,600 bps (Hernandez et al 2008). The wired CTT technology hindered the conventional mud pulse and electromagnetic telemetry method bandwidth restriction and time lag, resulting into high speed data transmission systems.…”

“…It has the advantages of real time, high speed, surface readout, and surface energy supply. However, wire line telemetry is prone to failures caused by the abrasive conditions of the mud and the wear abrasions caused by the rotation of the drill string [7], [8]. The use of special drill pipe and special tool joint connectors substantially increases the cost of the drilling operation.…”
