High statistics measurement ofKe4decay properties

Abstract: We report experimental details and results of a new measurement of the decay K + → π + π − e + νe (Ke4). A sample of more than 400,000 Ke4 events with low background has been collected by Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven Alternate Gradient Synchrotron. From these data, the branching ratio (4.11 ± 0.01 ± 0.11) · 10 −5 and the ππ invariant mass dependence of the form factors F , G, and H of the weak hadronic current as well as the phase shift difference δ

“…So far, this high theoretical precision has not been matched by a similar experimental accuracy. The best direct information on ππ scattering lengths is the one extracted from K e4 decays by the BNL-E865 experiment [7], which is affected by a sizable (∼ 6%) statistical error. Given the intrinsic statistical limitation of K e4 decays with respect to the dominant K → 3π modes, and the different nature of…”

“…(28)- (30) are much more complicate than those of the isospin-2 [9]. Actually, it partially reflects the fact that the LO χPT can nicely reproduce the I ¼ 2 s-wave ππ scattering length with just a 0.5% deviation as compared with the relevant experimental and theoretical results [1,7,8]. Nevertheless, in the isospin-0 channel, the agreement between LO χPT and corresponding experiments and theoretical results is departed by about 30% [1,7,8].…”

“…With stringent χPT constraints, the E865 secured ππ scattering lengths from the semileptonic K e4 decay [7]. Using Roy equations after the correction for isospin breaking mass effects, the NA48=2 decisive analyses of the K e4 and K 3π decays lead to the robust results on the s-wave ππ scattering lengths [8].…”

“…On the other hand, the charged K e4 decay has been measured by the E865 experiment [19,20] and the outgoing data have been analyzed in [21] and [22], independently. Before recalling the conclusions of both references, let us stress that the obtained value for a 0 0 is 7% accuracy and is compatible with the prediction of the standard power counting which rests on large N c grounds.…”
