High‐temperature, decompressional equilibration of the eclogite facies orogenic root (Western Gneiss Region, Norway)

Abstract: Garnet–clinopyroxene mafic rocks have been investigated in the outer coastal area of the northwestern‐most part of the Western Gneiss Region (WGR), South Norway. The garnet–clinopyroxene rocks occur as lenses with amphibolitized and deformed margins ranging in size from 1 m2 up to 2–3 km2. They are regionally widespread and included in migmatitic gneisses, mica schists and amphibolites. The mafic lenses vary from fine‐ to coarse‐grained with a strain variation from massive to coaxial S > L tectonite fabric. Ga… Show more

“…The obtained P-T conditions for decompressional HT equilibration of the Midsund granulite are in line with those recently calculated for comparable HP granulites occurring just north-east of the study area, as presented by Engvik et al (2018). These authors estimated minimum P-T conditions for HP granulites at 1.4-1.8 GPa and 900-1100 °C.…”

“…by Cuthbert et al (2000). As noted by Engvik et al (2018), the WGR was traditionally thought to be a relatively cold UHP terrane. Their results, coupled with these presented herein and other observations of granulitized eclogites from Nordøyane (e.g., Larsen et al 1998;Butler et al 2013) and farther northeast from northernmost Vestranden in the Roan area (Möller 1988), show that this part of the WGR must have undergone regional scale HT re-equilibration of the eclogitized orogenic root during the terminal stages of the Scandian collision.…”

“…They overlap in part with U-Pb zircon ages from granitic leucosomes (405-390 Ma; see compilation by Kylander-Clark & Hacker, 2014). Partial melting and local ultrahightemperature metamorphism occurred during high-temperature equilibration (e.g., Engvik et al, 2018;Ganzhorn et al, 2014;Kylander-Clark & Hacker, 2014;Labrousse et al, 2011). Yet, it remains controversial to what extent melting initiated at ultrahigh-pressure conditions (e.g., Kohn et al, 2015) and whether pressure estimates reflect other processes than burial only (e.g., Vrijmoed et al, 2009).…”
